Lakers Drop 72-68 Overtime Decision To Gannon

Allendale, Mich. - Junior guard Marcus Wallace hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left to send the game into overtime, but Gannon outscored the Lakers 13-9 in the extra session to claim a 72-68 GLIAC victory. GVSU falls to 10-6 overall and 2-5 in GLIAC action.

Gannon held a 27-26 halftime lead and built a five point lead midway through the second half. Gannon's largest lead in the game was five points, while the Lakers largest lead was 34-32 early in the second half. The Knights led 58-54 with 1:34 remaining, but Wallace and freshman Mike Hall each hit one of two free throws to pull the Lakers within two (58-56). Gannon forward Forrest Kirby hit one of two free throws to put the Knights up 59-56 before Wallace hit the three-pointer to send the game into overtime.

The teams traded buckets to start the overtime, but Gannon center Geoff Husted, who was held to just three points in regulation after coming into the game averaging 18.0, hit back-to-back buckets to put GU up 65-61. Three straight free throws pulled the Lakers within one (65-64), but Gannon hit six straight from the charity stripe to pull ahead 69-64. GVSU was able to make it a one possession game after a driving layup by Courtney James (71-68), but GU sealed the win with a made free throw by Forrest Kirby for the final score of 72-68.

Marcus Wallace and Eric Chess each tallied a double-double to lead the Lakers. Wallace scored a team-high 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Chess added 13 points and 10 caroms. Courtney James chipped in 12 points. GVSU hit just 20 of 59 shots from the floor, including just 4 of 28 from three-point land. The Lakers were 24-34 from the free throw line. GVSU held a 48-32 rebounding advantage.
