Grand Valley State outscored Wayne State 54-41 in the second half and 12-10 in overtime to claim a 97-95 GLIAC road victory Thursday night in Detroit, Mich. The win was GVSU's first in GLIAC play and upped the Lakers' record to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in league action.
Wayne State led by as many as 17 points (31-14) in the opening half and built a 13-point halftime lead (44-31) over the Lakers. The Warriors connected on eight three-pointers (8-13), including five en route to 23 first-half points by Jodi Young. WSU built a 48-33 lead early in the second half before the Lakers caught fire. Six lakers contributed to a 26-10 run from 19:29 until Cori Jewett hit a three-pointer at the 9:05 mark to give GVSU a 59-58 lead. Young hit another three to put WSU back in front, 61-59, but the Lakers tied the score twice on a pair of Zeeff jumpers. The Warriors built another five-point lead (72-67)after Young hit yet another three-pointer, but Jewett answered with a jumper and Julia Braseth hit a pair of free throws to pull the Lakers within one (72-71) at the 3:56 mark. Jewett hit a three to tie the game at 76-76 and Erika Ryskamp gave the Lakers a 78-76 lead with 2:36 remaining on a jumper. Janine Guastella converted a three-point play to put GVSU up 81-78, but Young hit a three to tie the game for the fifth time. Jewett hit one of two free throws to give GVSU an 82-81 lead before WSU's Ebony Vincent hit a layup to put WSU up 82-81. Zeeff hit a pair of free throws with 58 seconds remaining before Young tied the game for the sixth time (85-85) on a jumper with eight seconds left. Taushauna Churchwell missed a three for GVSU as time expired and the game went into OT.
The teams traded buckets in overtime until hit Churchwell a jumper and then added two free throws to give GVSU a 96-93 lead. Vincent hit a pair of free throws to pull WSU within one (96-95), before Zeeff hit one of two from the charity stripe to give the Lakers their final margin of 97-95. Wayne State's Jodi Young missed a jumper in the final seconds and Braseth gathered in the rebound to preserve the win.
Senior Julie Zeeff led GVSU with a 26-point, 19-rebound effort. Zeeff scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the final 25 minutes. Julia Braseth notched her second double-double with a 17-point, 16-rebound effort, while Cori Jewett tallied 16 points. Janine Guastella scored 13 points, all in the second half and overtime, while freshman guard Taushauna Churchwell scored a career-high 12 points. GVSU outrebounded WSU 53-27 and converted 30-of-37 free throws. Jodi Young led Wayne State with a school-record 48 points and eight three-pointers.
