#1 Grand Valley State scored on five of its first six offensive possessions and scored a defensive TD to stake a 40-7 halftime lead into a 50-14 rout over GLIAC foe Wayne State Saturday night. GVSU has now won 26 staight GLIAC games, 24 straight home games and 29 straight regular season games.
Michael Tennessee scored on runs of 2 and-1 yard in the first quarter, while safety DeJuane Boone scooped up a fumbe and returned it 12 yards for a TD to give GVSU a 19-0 lead after one quarter of play. Wayne State QB Randy Hutchinson put the Warriors on the board when he capped a 11-play, 58 -yard drive with a 9-yard TD run. GVSU answered quickly as QB Cullen Finnerty raced 53 yards for a TD to put the Lakers up 26-7. Finnerty hit Eric Fowler on a 15-yard scoring pass, before connecting with Ryan Hukill on a 5-yard score to give the Lakers a 40-7 halftime lead.
Hutchinson hit WR Michael Griffie on a 65-yard scoring pass early in the third quarter, but Finnerty hit freshman wideout Mark Catlin on a 30-yard scoring play to put the Lakers up 47-14. David Hendrix hit a 42-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to conclude the scoring.
GVSU rolled up 540 yards of total offense with a balanced attack of 258 rushing yards and 282 passing yards. Finnerty rushed for 109 yards and one TD, while completing 18-of-27 passes for 248 yard and three TDs. Ryan Hukill rushed for 69 yards, while Mark Catlin hauled in a team-high seven passes for 93 yards and a TD. Nine different Lakers caught a pass in the game.
Scott Mackey led the Laker defense with seven tackles, while Lucius Hawkins chipped in six stops. GVSU recorded eight tackles for loss and five QB sacks.
