Lakers Advance In NCAA Regional Action With 5-0 Win Over Southern Indiana

Midlaand, Mich. - The 2003 Grand Valley State women's tennis team made history Thursday (May 1) with the progam's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. The Lakers advanced to the second round with an impressive 5-0 win over Southern Indiana at the Midland Tennis Center. #3 GVSU, making just its second appearance in NCAA Championship play, will face #2 Northern Michigan Friday at 11:30 p.m.

GVSU (20-4) jumped out to a 3-0 after doubles play and never looked back. Laura Sukup and Nikki Fairchild claimed a 8-2 win at number one doubles, while Kellen Lynch and Marie Cameron quickly disposed of USI's number two doubles team 8-0. The Lakers finished the sweep at number three singles where Alison Koopsen and Kim VanSprange won 8-3. Koopsen added a win at number three singles in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) and Lynch finished off Southern Indiana with a 6-2, 6-1 win at number five singles.
