Grand Valley Takes Down South Dakota State 7-0

Joplin, Mo. - Ben Slein's complete game shutout led GVSU to a 7-0 win over South Dakota State on Thursday in Joplin, Mo. It was Slein's first appearance on the mound, who has also started in centerfield and second for the Lakers this season. Slein allowed only five hits and struck out two. The Lakers posted 13 hits and were led by Joe Brunink and Elijah Beckwith who had three hits apiece. It was the sixth straight win for the Lakers as they improve to 6-1 in 2003.

Slein started the game by getting out of bases loaded jams in both of the first two innings. However, he settled down allowing only one hit the rest of the way, retiring 16 of the final 18 batters he faced.

The Lakers started the scoring in the third when Tony Pfennig knocked in two with a two-out single to right. GVSU remained silent until Brunink led of the sixth with a double. After a single by Elijah Beckwith, Brunink scored on a double by Kevin Boyd. Beckwith ended up scoring the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Scott Allen.

The Lakers added the final three in the seventh as the first six batters reached base with five singles and an error. Pfenning, Beckwith, and Boyd each picked up a RBI in the inning.

Pfennig had two hits and three RBI on the day, while Boyd and Jeremy Lundberg also tallied two hits apiece.

The Lakers play a twin bill against #13 Central Oklahoma on Friday in Edmond, Oklahoma.
