Grand Valley State split a doubleheader Sunday versus West Liberty, dropping a 9-8 decision in game one, while coming back to take the nightcap, 13-3. GVSU improves heads into GLIAC play with a 9-4 overall mark.
West Liberty jumped on the Lakers for eight runs in the first three innings in the opening game Sunday. GVSU cam back to tie the game in the top of the sixth, however, WLS scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 9-8 win. Junior Matt Rayfeld took the loss for the Lakers on the hill. Sophomore outfielder Joe Mertes singled and homered en route to three RBI. Tony Pfennig recorded three hits, while Scott Allen doubled in a pair of runs. Kevin Boyd hit a solo homerun for GVSU.
Game two was all GVSU after West Liberty scored a single run in the top of the first. GVSU erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third and nine more in the bottom of the fifth. The Lakers scored 13 runs on 14 hits, while WLS scored three runs on five hits. Nathan Barden picked up the win, yielding four hits and three runs in five inning of work. Joe Finnerty went the final two innnings. Mike McCallister led the Laker attack with three hits and three runs scored. Boyd doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Joe Brunink also double twice and drove in a pair of runs. Matt Wright and Pfennig each notched two hits and drove in two runs.
Grand Valley State, picked third in the 2003 GLIAC coaches poll, will open the GLIAC portion of its schedule Saturday at Gannon University.
