The record-setting 2002-03 Grand Valley State women's basketball campaign came to an end Friday night with a 69-63 loss to Northern Kentucky in NCAA DII Great Lakes Regional quarterfinal action at the University of Indianapolis. Grand Valley State concludes the season with a mark of 24-7.
Grand Valley State jumped out to an early 10 point lead (21-11), but the NKU went on a 14-2 run and took a 25-23 lead on an Ann Mobley's three-pointer with 8:45 left in the opening stanza. However, the Lakers quickly regained the lead (26-25) with a Jen Nielsen three-pointer, but the teams traded three lead changes and were tied on three more occasions over the final 6:49 of the first half. The final tie of the first half came in the closing 10 seconds when Northern Kentucky's Jessica Brock hit a three to knot the score at 39-39. NKU went on a three-point barrage in the opening seven minutes of the second half as Bridget Flanagan hit three treys and Kristen Polosky hit one of her own to give the Norse a 53-46 lead. The Lakers regrouped and went on a 10-0 run of their own to pull into a 56-53 lead. Sophomore forward Diana Voikos scored five straight points to close out the run. Northern Kentucky answered quickly in this game of runs with a 9-2 scoring margin over the next 2:30 to pull in front 62-58. GVSU pulled to within two (62-60) on a Cori Jewett jumper, but NKU connected on five free throws to close the game and gain the 69-63 win.
Bridget Flanagan and Amy Mobley led Northern Kentucky with 17 points apiece, while Sharell Snardon added 15 in the scoring column. Northern Kentucky hit 12-of-26 three-pointers on the night, including Flanagan and Mobley going a combined 9-18 from the three-point line. Senior Laurie Rehmann led GVSU, scoring a game-high 20 points in her final collegiate game. Junior center Julie Zeeff added 16 points, while Jennifer Nielsen chipped in nine points. GVSU shot 52 percent (26-50) from the floor, but just 26.7 percent (4-15) from the three-point line. Grand Valley State set the single-season school record for wins (24) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years.
