#14 Lakers Snap LSSU Win Streak With 56-54 Victory

Allendale, Mich. - #14 Grand Valley State snapped Lake Superior State's 13-game winning streak with a 76-74 victory on Saturday in the GVSU Fieldhouse. Laurie Rehmann made a driving basket with just under a minute remaining to tie the score and sophomore Janine Guastella knocked down two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the Lakers a two point advantage. The GLIAC's top-ranked defense clinched the win with a stop on LSSU's last second effort. GVSU held the second highest scoring team in the nation to only 34.5% shooting from the field and forced 23 LSSU turnovers. Rehmann led the Lakers on the offensive end with 19 points and seven assists and also on the defensive end with a career high eight steals. Grand Valley State, the second ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, improves to 20-3 overall and 11-3 in the GLIAC. LSSU, who is #4 in the regional rankings, drops to 18-4 on the year and 13-2 in conference action.

LSSU scored the first eight points of the game, as GVSU didn't get their first points until five minutes into the game. Grand Valley fought back with a 14-3 run to regain the lead for the rest of the half and went into the break up 24-21. LSSU took their first lead of the second half with five minutes remaining after a 17-8 run gave them a 50-48 advantage. The score was tied three times and the lead changed hands another four times in the last five minutes. After Rehmann tied the score with 52 seconds, GVSU forced a miss but turned the ball over on the rebound giving LSSU another shot. The second shot fell off the rim and Guastella earned free throws that would seal the win with good position underneath.

The Grand Valley defense held LSSU to its lowest scoring output of the season and 34 points under their 88 points per game average. GVSU limited its turnovers to only 12 while recording 17 assists and 12 steals.

Junior Julie Zeeff equaled Rehmann with 19 points and added six rebounds and four blocks. Guastella was the final Laker in double-digits with 11 points. Jaida Bourke pulled down a career high nine rebounds including the final carom of the game in the closing seconds.

Grand Valley will play at Ferris State on Monday at 8:00 pm before hosting Saginaw Valley State on Thursday in the final home game of the regular season.
