#5 Grand Valley State used a balanced attack to claim a 3-1 (27-30, 30-18, 30-26, 30-25) GLIAC road win over Northern Michigan Saturday (Sept. 21). Carly Miller moved into second place on the Laker career kills list with 18 kills in the game passing Carmen Bolden on the list with 1,815 kills. GVSU (11-1 overall; 2-0 GLIAC) will return to action Sunday (Sept. 22) at Lake Superior State.
Miller, a senior All-American candidate, is now looking up at Carrie Baker who leads the kills list with 1,987 kills in her career from 1991-1994 at GVSU. Miller is trying to become only the 18th player in the history of NCAA DII volleyball to record 2,000 kills in a career.
GVSU dropped the first game after hitting just .100, but rebounded and dominated the rest of the match by hitting .500 in game two, .293 in game three and .552 in game four. The Lakers hit a sizzling .320 for the match, while NMU hit .221. GVSU committed just two attack errors in second and fourth games.
Junior Sabrina Bird hit .435 with 13 kills, while senior Tracy Skrzypek notched 11 kills and hit .350. Sophomore Elisa Joris hit .348 with 11 kills and freshman Tracy Kirk recorded 11 kills and hit .290. Nicole Bayle recorded 50 assists, while senior Chara Fehsenfeld recorded a game-high 12 digs. Miller and Skrzypek each tallied 10 digs.
