Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State's offense may have looked a little rusty in game one, but it was back to its old form in the GLIAC opener, as they rolled up 594 yards of total offense in a 49-14 victory over Wayne State in Detroit on Saturday. Senior QB Curt Anes threw for five touchdowns and completed 20 of 32 passes for 336 yards. Three of his touchdown strikes went to David Kircus who caught four passes for 49 yards. GVSU, the unanimous #1 selection in the AFCA poll, is now 2-0 on the season.

After Wayne State missed a 43 yard field goal, Anes took the GVSU offense 74 yards in eight plays, which finished with a 24-yard TD pass to Terrance Banks. The Laker defense then forced a three and out, and a punt from the WSU 1 yard line. Grand Valley took over the ball at the 47 and drove down the field for their third straight score, an eight-yard touchdown from Anes to Kircus, to make the score 21-0. Brent Lesniak finished the first half scoring for GVSU with a 13-yard TD run with 1:41 in the half. Wayne State drove down the field in the last minute and a half and scored on a 34-yard touchdown strike from Randy Hutchison to Marqus Anthony with 0:14 left, to cut the GVSU lead to 28-7 at halftime.

The Laker defense forced a quick three and out for the WSU offense to start the second half and then the offense went 56 yards in 2:03 which finished with another Anes to Kircus 17-yard touchdown. Mike Holloway scored his first touchdown at GVSU with 6:26 left in the third quarter on a nine-yard TD reception from Anes to give the Lakers a 42-7 lead.
