Box Score

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State improved to 3-0 in the 2002 soccer season with a 4-2 victory over St. Joseph's College on Monday (Sept. 2). The Lakers scored two goals in the final 1:09 to secure the win.

Jordan Stevenson scored the game winning goal as she flipped a shot over St. Joseph's goalie Emily Durwood at the 88:51 mark of the game. It was the second goal of the season for Stevenson. Freshman Mirela Tutundzic sealed the victory with her fourth goal of the season 24 seconds later with the assist from fellow freshman Jackie Lange.

The game started slowly as both teams were unable to score in the first half. The Lakers came out quickly in the second period as senior Tricia Plum scored an unassisted goal 35 seconds into the half. Freshman Jenny Swalec scored the first goal of her GVSU career off of a pass from Michelle Versluis five minutes later to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

The Lakers dominated play for most of the game out shooting St. Joseph's 25 to 4 and 16 to 2 in the second half. However, the Pumas scored goals on both of their shots in second frame to tie the score at 2-2 at the 75:54 mark.

GVSU went on a late flurry towards the end of the game but were unable to produce. The Lakers had a free kick and three straight corner kicks with 2:00 minutes to play, with the final kick leading to a flurry of action that resulted in the goal by Stevenson.

Grand Valley will play two games at Indianapolis next weekend versus Quincy, Ill. on Sept. 6 at 11:00 am and Southern Indiana on Sept. 8 at 3:00 pm.
