Grand Valley State improved to 9-0 with a 74-50 win over Grace College on Saturday at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers led by only six at halftime but held the Lancers scoreless for the first 8:30 minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 22 and cruised the rest of the way. GVSU was led by sophomore foward Diana Voikos who was a perfect 9 of 9 from the floor for 18 points. The Lakers are off to the second best start in school history behind only a 16-0 start in the 97-98 season.
The Lakers got off to a slow start and Grace stayed in the ballgame in the first half by shooting 52% from the field. GVSU led by only two, 31-29 with a minute left in the first half but scored back to back buckets in the last minute to stretch the lead to 35-29 at the break. GVSU went on a 16-0 run to start the second half and led by at least 18 the rest of the way. The Lakers defense forced 30 turnovers, including 16 steals, and held Grace to only 22% shooting in the final period.
Cori Jewett scored 17 points, as she shot 7 of 10 from the floor and 3 of 4 from behind the arc. Julie Zeeff scored 14 points with a game high 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Jen Nielsen added 9 points and 5 assists.
Grand Valley will travel to Northwood on Monday, December 16, for a GLIAC matchup which starts at 5:30 pm.
