Grand Valley State remained undefeated in GLIAC action with a 3-1 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday in Erie, Penn. It was the first win for GVSU over Mercyhurst in the seven times the two teams have played. The Lakers fell behind early in the contest as Mercyhurst scored less than three minutes into the game. But GVSU responded with a goal of their own two minutes later to tie the score and finished off MC with the final two goals of the game. Freshman Jenny Swalec remained hot with two goals and Jeanna Falduto scored the game winner for GVSU. The Lakers improve to 12-2 on the season and 5-0 in the GLIAC. GVSU is ranked #5 in the latest Great Lakes Regional poll and play at Gannon on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
After allowing the early goal, Swalec scored her first goal unassisted 6:09 into the game. The defenses then took control before Falduto picked up her second goal of the season with less than three minutes left in the half. Jordan Stevenson and Tricia Plum both registered assists on the game winning goal.
The defense again remained in control for most of the second half before Swalec put the nail in the coffin with 2:20 left in the game. It was the sixth goal in the last four games for Swalec, who earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors after scoring three goals last week. Jenny has registered nine goals on the year.
Melissa Henson made 12 saves in goal to earn the win and improve her record to 11-2 on the season.
