Grand Valley State swept Mercyhurst 30-26, 30-25, 32-30 in GLIAC action on Friday night (Oct. 11) in Erie, Penn. The Lakers hit .381 for the match with 51 kills and 10 blocks. Grand Valley was led by senior Carly Miller who recorded 18 kills and a .432 attack percentage. GVSU, ranked #3 in the AVCA poll, improves to 17-2 overall and 8-1 in GLIAC action while Mercyhurst falls to 15-4 and 7-2 in conference play.
GVSU hit .333 in game one while forcing MC to a -.024 attack percentage. The Lakers continued their torid hitting with a .485 attack percentage in the second game and put the match away with 17 kills and a .350 percentage in the final game.
Miller is averaging 4.89 kills per game over the last five matches and now has recorded 1,921 kills in her four years with the Lakers. Carly needs 67 kills to break Carrie Baker's GVSU record for kills in a career.
Miller was not the only Laker putting up solid numbers. Elisa Joris tallied 7 kills with a .500 attack percentage and three blocks, while Sabrina Bird recorded 9 kills while hitting .381 with 4 blocks. Senior Chara Fehsenfeld posted 6 kills and 11 digs and freshman Katie Horvath led the Lakers in digs with 17. Nicole Bayle posted 38 assists to lead the Laker offensive attack.
The Lakers play at Gannon at 1:00 pm on Saturday (Oct. 12).
