Photo Gallery11 Lakers reached the scoring column on Tuesday night (Dec. 16) in a total team effort, as Grand Valley State defeated Ohio Dominican by a 73-52 score in Allendale. The Lakers made 28-of-38 free throws, forced 18 ODU turnovers, and never trailed in the 21-point victory.
It was the second home win in three days for Grand Valley State, who improves to 5-4 on the year. The Lakers even their GLIAC record at 2-2. Ohio Dominican drops to 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in league action.
GVSU owned a 28-7 advantage in made free throws, as ODU went just 7-for-8 at the line. Coincidentally, that 21-point edge was the scoring margin in the victory. The Lakers also had a 21-7 scoring edge in points off turnovers, while only committing seven turnovers themselves.
Five Grand Valley State players scored eight or more points, led by the two Darrens. Senior center
Darren Washington tallied a game-high 11 points, while junior guard
Darren Kapustka provided 10 points off the bench. Both players recorded five rebounds. Junior forward
Ricardo Carbajal and freshman guard
Myles Miller each notched nine points.
Making his second consecutive start, Miller connected on a three-pointer at the 12:04 mark of the first half to give GVSU a 13-6 lead. The Lakers would stretch the lead out to 28-18 on an old-fashioned three-point play from sophomore
Trevin Alexander with just over three minutes remaining in the half.

Luke Ryskamp free throws, a layup from
Ryan Sabin, and two Washington freebies sent Grand Valley State into halftime with a 36-22 lead. In the opening 20 minutes, GVSU hit 18-of-22 free throw attempts and led by 14 points despite shooting just 29.6 percent from the field.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Miller and Kapustka early in the second half gave the Lakers a 19-point lead and halted any threats of an ODU comeback; the Panthers would only get as close as 12 points in the second half. After Ohio Dominican pulled within a dozen at 54-42, GVSU notched a 12-2 run to stretch the lead to 22 points with less than five minutes to go.
Ohio Dominican ended up outshooting the Lakers from the field, 37.3 to 35.8. Both teams drained seven three-pointers, but GVSU did so on just 14 attempts, while ODU took 22 tries to hit seven treys. Grand Valley State recorded a dozen offensive rebounds and owned an 18-5 edge in second chance points.
Carbajal led the Lakers with seven rebounds in just 17 minutes, as he battled foul trouble the whole game. Ryskamp provided eight points, while Alexander, Kapustka, and
Aaron Hayes dished out three assists apiece. Miller, Kapustka, and Ryskamp all knocked down a pair of three-pointers.
GVSU closes out the 2014 schedule with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Purdue-North Central on Saturday (Dec. 20) in Allendale.
