Lakers Defeat Ferris State 2-1 Thursday

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated rival Ferris State 2-1 on the road Thursday (Oct. 29) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 9-3-5 on the season and 7-2-4 in the GLIAC.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half. GVSU led 5-3 in shots through the first 45 minutes. In the second half, GVSU would take a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute. Ava Kozak put the Lakers in front with her fifth goal of the season. Kozak took the ball away from the Ferris State at the top of the box and created space to kick it up and over the goalkeeper with the left foot.

Ferris State would tie the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute. The Lakers would retake the lead in the 85th minute off the foot of Cora Conley with the assist by Lina Rea. Conley received a pass from Rea just inside the top of the box. She made a move to her left to create space and fired a shot with the left foot that went into the top left corner of the goal.

Kozak led all players with a goal and four shots with two on target in 81 minutes. Sarah Fromm notched three shots, while Conley scored the game-winning goal on two shots and played all 90 minutes. Vesna Dennison added two shots with both of them being on goal, while Cole Lance recorded three shots. Macie Hunter got the start in goal and made one save.

GVSU will close out the regular season at home when they host Northern Michigan on Saturday, October 31st. First kick is set for 1:00 pm at the GVSU Soccer Field. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
