ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team claimed a 2-1 win against Purdue Northwest Sunday (Nov. 2) afternoon on Senior Day. With the win, the Lakers claimed the GLIAC regular season championship for the 18
thtime in program history. GVSU is now 14-2 on the season and 11-1 in the GLIAC.
GVSU got off to a fast start, scoring the opening goal in the third minute. Off a free kick,
Alli French played a short ball to
Sonya Mehta who fired a shot that was stopped by the goalkeeper.
Kacy Lauer was in great position by the left post and kicked home the rebound into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season and second of the weekend. The Lakers would double the lead in the 14
th minute off the foot of
Kendall Aikens.
Mackenzie Ford sent a ball towards the right post for
Alli French who played it to Aikens for second goal of the season. Purdue Northwest would score in the 79
th minute to make it a one-goal game, but GVSU would hang on for the win.
GVSU outshot Purdue Northwest 13-7 with 9-4 on frame. The Lakers produced six corner kicks and held the Pride to just one.
Sonya Mehta led the Lakers with three shots with one on target.
Kacy Lauer notched her sixth goal of the season and played all 90 minutes.
Kendall Aikens scored her first game-winning goal of the season and recorded two shots both on frame.
Alli French dished out two assists with one shot on goal.
Mackenzie Ford dished out an assist and played all 90 minutes in the win.
Macie Hunter got the start in goal and made three saves.
GVSU will be back home next weekend for the final two games of the regular season. The Lakers will host Roosevelt on Thursday, November 6
th at 5:00 pm and will close the regular season against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, November 8
