Lakers Blank Northern Michigan 4-0 in GLIAC Semifinals

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team shutout Northern Michigan 4-0 in the GLIAC semifinals Friday (Nov. 14) afternoon. The Lakers advance to the GLIAC championship game on Sunday (Nov. 16) at 1:00 pm against the winner of Parkside and Saginaw Valley State.
 
With the win, GVSU improves to 18-2 on the season and recorded their GLIAC leading 12th shutout of the season. Alli French got the Lakers on the board in the 10th minute for her sixth goal of the season. Cora Conley played a ball for Kendall Aikens on the right side. Aikens placed a cross for French near the back left post who kicked it in for the game's first goal. Four minutes later, French doubled the lead with her second of the game and seventh of the season. After a clear attempt by Northern Michigan. Sonya Mehta made a great first touch and passed it to French at the top of the box for a shot with the left foot that went past the goalkeeper at the bottom left of the goal.
 
In the second half, GVSU scored to make it 3-0 in the 51st minute. Vesna Dennison placed a cross from the right side that was deflected away by a Wildcat defender and right to Kendall Aikens who settled the ball and fired a shot up and over the goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season. Later in the game, Mackenzie Ford added her fifth goal of the season on a header in the middle of the box on a corner kick sent in by Alex Williams
 
GVSU outshot Northern Michigan 19-4 and 11-0 on target. The Lakers produced six corner kicks and did not allow a corner kick to the Wildcats. French led the Lakers with two goals on four shots with two on frame. Cora Conley dished out an assist and recorded three shots with two on goal. Kendall Aikens and Mackenzie Ford each scored a goal with two shots. Ivy Wilhelm and Amanda Palmer added two shots in the win. Macie Hunter got the win in goal and notched her 11th shutout of the season.
