No. 1 Lakers Travel to SVSU Friday; Host Parkside Sunday

ALLENDALE – The No. 1 Grand Valley State women's soccer team continues GLIAC action when they travel to Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Sept. 27) for a 1:00 PM kickoff in University Center, Michigan. The Lakers will return home on Sunday (Sept. 29) at 1:00 PM when they host Parkside for senior day.

GVSU opened their GLIAC schedule last weekend on the road. The Lakers defeated Northern Michigan 1-0 and Michigan Tech 2-1 to improve to 5-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in GLIAC play. GVSU swept the GLIAC player of the week honors with Kennedy Bearden earning offensive honors and Cailynn Junk earning defensive honors. Bearden scored both goals in the win against Michigan Tech to notch her 100th career point in a Laker uniform. Junk earned her second shutout of the season making a season high seven saves against Northern Michigan, while also stopping five shots against Michigan Tech.
 
The Lakers were ranked number one in the United Soccer Coaches national poll for the second consecutive week. GVSU has outscored their opponent 8-3 including three clean sheets. Kennedy Bearden, Emma Chudik, and Alli French lead the way with two goals each. Bearden and Chudik lead the team with five points each. Cailynn Junk is 4-0-1 in goal with two shutouts, while making 19 saves.
 
Saginaw Valley State is 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals opened their conference schedule last weekend with a loss against Purdue Northwest and a win at Roosevelt. Rileigh Garbarz leads the Cardinals with two goals and three assists for seven points to start the season. Medi Bajis has notched two goals on 11 shots. Goalkeeper Lainey Garbarz has made five starts in goal notching 18 saves with three clean sheets. 
 
Parkside enters the weekend with a 2-3-0 overall record and 0-1-0 GLIAC mark. The Rangers opened their GLIAC schedule with a 1-0 loss at home against Ferris State. All five games Parkside has played have been a 1-0 contest and will play on Friday at Davenport before traveling to Allendale on Sunday. Emily Mikkelson and Ava Rizzitano have scored a goal each for the Rangers, while goalkeeper Lola Minic has produced two clean sheets making 24 saves.
