Lakers End Lewis Dome Tournament with 13-2 Mercy Rule Win over Bemidji State

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State softball team ended the weekend at the Lewis Dome Tournament with a 13-2 mercy rule win over Bemidji State Sunday (Feb. 25) morning in Rosemont, Illinois. The Lakers improve to 6-3 on the season.
 
Genesis Eggart picked up the win to improve to 4-0 in the circle this season. Eggart tossed five innings allowing just one hit while striking out 10 batters. Hannah Hollister led the Lakers offensively going 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Morgan Spicer batted 3-4 with a run scored. Kelsey Komorous and Liberti Fair led the team with three RBI's each. Megan Koenigshof went 3-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and RBI. Jenna Ballard added two hits with a double and two runs scored.
 
The Lakers jumped out to a fast start scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning. Hollister and Spicer led the game off with back-to-back singles and Hollister would score the opening run in the next at bat off the RBI by Komorous. Jasmine Mauk double the next at bat to score Spicer. Two batters later, Koenigshof drove home Mauk with an RBI double followed by a Fair RBI single to make it 4-0. 
 
Later in the first inning, Jenna Ballard doubled to put runners at second and third for Faith Edwards to hit a 2-RBI single to score both Fair and Ballard making it 6-0. Hollister would come up to bat again in the inning and would hit an RBI single to score Edwards. Bemidji State would score two runs in the bottom half to cut the lead to 7-2.
 
GVSU answered with a pair of runs in the second to give them a seven-run lead again. MaryJane Goodman doubled and would score off the bat of Fair who also would drive home Koenigshof. The Lakers would add one run in the third off a Goodman sacrifice fly scoring Hollister. 
 
In the fourth inning, the Lakers would bring across three more runs to go ahead 13-2. Hollister notched her fourth hit of the game with an RBI single to score Ballard. Two batters later, Komorous drove home Hollister and Edwards with a single. The Lakers would shutout Bemidji State in the last four innings to claim the mercy rule win in five innings.
