Lakers Dominate Wilmington 10-2 in College World Series Opening Round

Will face UT Tyler tomorrow at 12:00 PM

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.
 – The Grand Valley State softball team opened the College World Series with a dominate 10-2 victory against Wilmington (Del.) Thursday (May 25) afternoon at Frost Stadium at Warner Park. The Lakers improve to 46-6 on the season and will face UT Tyler in the winner's bracket tomorrow (May 26) at 12:00 PM. 
 
The Lakers struck first in the top of the first inning to go up 1-0. Joanna Cirrincione doubled to left field. Two batters later with two outs in the inning, Kelsey Komorous singled to right field to score Cirrincione. Wilmington answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at one on a sacrifice RBI bunt. 
 
After two scoreless innings, the Lakers poured across four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Hannah Hollister led the inning off with a double to center field. After Hollister advanced to third on a wild pitch, Morgan Spicer singled to left center to give the Lakers the 2-1 lead. After back-to-back singles by Megan Koenigshof and Kaitlin Lynch to load the bases, Cirrincione walked to score Spicer making it 3-1. Next at bat, Lydia Goble singled through the right side to score Koenigshof. Morgan Wagner made it 5-1 on an RBI groundout. 
 
The Wildcats got a run back in the fifth inning to cut the Laker lead to 5-2. The Lakers limited the damage and held the Wildcats to just one run scored off a great defensive play by Goble. GVSU quickly answered by scoring three runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead. Lynch reached base on an error and stole second during the next at bat. After Cirrincione walked, Goble roped a double to right center to score both Lynch and Cirrincione. Later in the inning, Komorous hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Goble. 
 
The Lakers added two more runs in the seventh inning to take a commanding 10-2 lead. Hollister reached base on an error and advanced to third. Spicer reached on another error next at bat that scored Hollister. Cirrincione drove in the tenth run later in the inning with the bases loaded to score Spicer. 
 
Hannah Beatus was dominant once again in the circle for the Lakers earning her 28th win of the season. Beatus tossed seven innings allowing two runs off six hits, while striking out eight. Megan Koenigshof batted 3-4 with a run scored. Morgan Spicer hit 2-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Lydia Goble went 2-5 with a double, run scored, and three runs batted in. Joanna Cirrincione notched a hit with two runs batted in, two runs scored, and two walks, while Hannah Hollister and Kaitlin Lynch each added a hit and two runs scored. Kelsey Komorous went 1-3 with two runs batted in.
