MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team advanced to the Midsest Regional Championship game after defeating Maryville 2-1 in the NCAA Tournament Sunday (Nov. 19) afternoon. The Lakers improve t0 13-3-6 on the season and will face Ashland in the Midwest Regional Championship in two weeks.
The Lakers outshot Maryville 20-14, 12-5 on goal and produced seven corner kicks to the Saints five. Possession went back and forth between the two teams early on. The Lakers would open the scoring in the 34
th minute off the head of
Stephanie Sturgeon.
Sophia Morgan placed a great ball into the box off a corner kick for Sturgeon to head it in for her third goal of the weekend. The Lakers would hang on to the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Lakers would double their lead in the 63
rd minute off the foot of
Ryann Fetty.
Taylor Reid made a great lead pass on the right side for
Abby Winn who would cross it into the box for Fetty to kick it home for the 2-0 lead. That goal was Fetty's third of the season. Maryville quickly responded one minute later with a long range shot that found the back of the net to cut the Laker lead back to one. The Lakers would defend the Saints last offensive push and would hang on for the 2-1 win to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
Fetty led the Lakers with the game winning goal on two shots on goal in 81 minutes of play. Sturgeon notched her third goal of the weekend and played all 90 minutes of action. Morgan and Winn each picked up an assist, while Morgan led the team with four shots including three on goal.
Claire Breault added three shots with one on goal in the win.
Isabel Imes got the start for the Lakers in goal and made four saves.
