Lakers Finish Second and Third at 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field team ended their 2021-22 season hosting the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan. The Lakers women claimed their third second-place finish of the year, while the men's team finished third at the outdoor championships. West Texas A&M placed first on the women's side with 77 points, GVSU scored 64, and Minnesota State finished third with 57 points. The Pittsburg State men's team took home first-place with 70 points, followed by West Texas A&M in second with 61 points and GVSU in third with 56 points.  Full Results

In a jump off for the crown, Elli Kimes won the women's pole vault clearing a height of 4.25m. Kimes ends her career at Grand Valley with two national pole vault championships. Emma Richards made her way to the podium for a second time during the 2022 Championships placing fourth in the women's shot put with a distance of 15.37m. 

Klaudia O'Malley and Allie Ludge finished fourth and fifth scoring 9 points in the women's 1500m. O'Malley crossed the line with a time of 4:20.64, Ludge crossed fifth with a time of 4:21.55. Taryn Chapko placed sixth in the 800m final clocking in a time of 2:09.38. Jessica Gockley made her ninth career appearance on the National podium after finishing seventh in the women's 5000m with a time of 16:22.01. 

Freshman Brandon Miller won his second 200m NCAA DII Championship running a school-record time of 20.20. Miller qualified for the finals by running a time of 20.44 in the prelims. Myles Kerner reached a career high at the national stage placing second in the men's shot put with a distance of 19.22m. Tanner Chada and Isaac Harding made their second appearance on the podium finishing fourth and sixth in the men's 5000m. Chada finished fourth with a time of 13:58.51, followed by Harding in sixth with a time of 14:04.32.  

In the 4x100m relay team of Caelon Harkey, Brandon Miller, Myles Rhodes, Jalen Kyles placed sixth with a time of 40.14. Caelon Harkey, Jackson Blanchard, Brandon Miller, Myles Rhodes finished fifth in the 4x400m relay clocking in a time of 3:09.29 and ending the Lakers season.  The GVSU men's team end the 2021-22 year with two first place finishes at the cross country and indoor championships, and third at the outdoor championships.
