No. 7 Softball sweeps doubleheader from Tiffin Sunday

Hannah Beatus throws perfect game; Lakers win both 8-0

TIFFIN, Ohio – The No. 7 Grand Valley State softball team swept a doubleheader Sunday (March 20) over the Tiffin Dragons with a pair of 8-0 wins at Paradiso Field. The Lakers improve to 14-1 on the season while Tiffin drops to 11-13. The Lakers are back in action Monday on the road against the Ashland Eagles for another doubleheader.

Hannah Beatus (W, 6-0) hurled a perfect game in the opener, going 15-up and 15-down in the run-rule, five-inning win. She struck out six along the way and now stands alone in second all-time in GVSU history in no-hitters with four, two behind the all-time lead. It was her second no-hitter this season and first perfect game of her career, marking the fifth perfect game in program history and the first since 2018.

The offense got her a lead in the second inning when Taylor Rieger slapped a double into the left field corner to chase home Hannah Hollister from first base. Rieger later scored on a fielder's choice on the final out of the inning, getting to the plate before the tagout to secure a second run.

Three more runs scored in the fourth on a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double from Lydia Goble. Then, speed thrilled in the fifth when a Joanna Cirrincione single, coupled by an error, were enough to plate all three runners on base to push the lead to the run-rule limit.

The bats picked right up in game two, scoring five runs in the first inning. Before an out was recorded, Rieger smashed a two-run homer and Morgan Wagner also singled home a run in the inning before a Dragon error allowed two more runs to score. A sacrifice fly by Kelsey Komorous plated a run in the second, then a bases loaded walk from Janalee Lyke and Riger sacrifice fly rounded out the scoring in the seventh.

Ashley Platek got her first win of the year (1-0) with a complete-game shutout. She allowed five hits and walked a pair while striking out eight.

The Lakers are back in action for another regional doubleheader with the Ashland Eagles on Monday afternoon, beginning at 2 PM. Visit GVSULakers.com or follow @GVSUSoftball on social media for live coverage links and updates.
