Taryn Chapko, and
Klaudia O'Malley are ranked first in the Nation after winning the distance medley relay at the GVSU Big Meet - Saturday on Feb. 12. Running anchor, O'Malley brought home the win crossing the line first with a time of 11:31.14. The men's distance medley relay team made up of
John Groendyk,
Jackson Blanchard,
Dennis Mbuta, and
Caleb Futter broke the track record clocking in a first-place time of 9:43.69. Groendyk and Mbuta were apart of the previous record set in 2020 (9:46.51).
"The highlights of the day were the two DMR teams that should get us into the championship meet with the women leading the country and a fifth best mark for the men," said head coach
Jerry Baltes. "It was great to comeback from where we were yesterday, and to now be in a good spot moving forward."
The Laker women put in a great effort, as
Jenna Doyle and
Alessia Olhava went first and second in the women's high jump, with Doyle clearing a height of 1.63m and Olhava 1.58m.
Maria Mitchell ran a personal-best in the 800m finishing fifth with a time of 2:13.95.
Corrina Courser won the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.87.
Brooke Barkocky,
Madelyn Allman,
Isabel Abdouch, and
Deji'ona Simpson ran the women's 4x400m relay placing second with a time of 3:58.6. Rette Thorns placed fourth in shot put putting a distance of 13.31m.
On the men's team,
Brandon Miller continues to grow in the men's 200m finishing second with a time of 21.68, Miller set a new school record in the 200m on Friday, Feb. 12 with a time of 21.54.
Brenden Faulkner ran a season-best time in the 400m with a time of 49.58.
Jacob Urban placed third in the men's weight throw (17.95m), followed by
Shane Byrne in fourth (17.88m).
Brad Warman had a good day as he put up a season-best in shot put with a distance of 16.34m.
The Lakers end their regular season next weekend hosting the GVSU Tune-Up on Friday, Feb. 18. The championship season will then kickoff as Grand Valley host the GLIAC Championships in two weeks (Feb 26 - 27).
