PREVIEW: Lakers Set to Face Ferris State for Regional Championship

GVSU seeks 13th straight regional title

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The top seed Grand Valley State women's soccer team resume NCAA Tournament action this weekend when they face Ferris State in the Midwest Regional Championship in Bemidji, Minnesota Friday (Nov. 18) afternoon at 1:00 PM ET, 12:00 PM CT. The Lakers seek to claim their 13th consecutive regional championship that dates back to 2009.
 
GVSU is 15-2-4 on the season and have won their last six matches, outscoring their opponents 20-2 in that span. The Lakers opened NCAA Tournament play last weekend with a 1-0 win over Maryville in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. Taylor Reid notched the lone goal in the 15th minute off a corner kick insert by Cate Brown.
 
Reid has notched seven goals in the last five matches and was named the D2CCA Midwest Region Player of the Year. Reid, Kennedy Bearden, Cate Brown, and Mackenzie Jones were the four Lakers to be named to the D2CCA Midwest All-Region First Team, the most by any team. 
 
This will be the fourth meeting between the Lakers and Bulldogs this season. The two programs tied each other twice in the regular season with a scoreless 0-0 draw at Ferris State in the GLIAC opener on September 9th, followed by a 1-1 draw at Grand Valley State on October 16th.  The Lakers won the third meeting 3-0 in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals on November 4th. GVSU leads the all-time series against Ferris State 34-5-4.
 
Kennedy Bearden leads the Lakers with 33 points on the season and Taylor Reid leads the team with 15 goals. Both Bearden and Reid have notched five game-winning goals. Cate Brown has notched three goals and three assists for nine points for the Lakers and was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Kennedy Metzger has added three goals and four assists for 10 points. Goalkeeper Kendall Robertson was named the GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year and has started in all 22 matches between the pipes this season. Robertson has posted eight shutouts and three combined shutouts, making 55 saves for a .809 save percentage.
 
Ferris State defeated Ashland in penalty kicks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, before beating Cedarville 3-1 in the second round to advance to Friday's match. The Bulldogs are 11-5-6 on the season, outscoring their opponents 31-19. 
 
Ferris State is led by All-GLIAC first team selection Isabella Zamborini who has scored 13 goals and dished out six assists for 32 points on the season. Zamborini was also named to the D2CCA Midwest All-Region second team along with Nikki May and Lindsay Cole. Payton Price has notched five goals for the Bulldog attack, while May has added four goals and three assists for 11 points.  Goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei has appeared in 17 matches making 16 starts. Mosallaei has posted six shutouts making 59 saves for a .766 save percentage.
