ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 1 Grand Valley State Lakers used a dominant second half to earn a 3-0 win over No. 6 Lee Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers improve to 2-0 after the opening weekend of the season while Lee falls to 1-1 on the year.
Gianna Parlove,
Ava Cook and
Kennedy Bearden all scored for the Lakers in the win.
After a rocky first quarter-hour, the Lakers settled in and started to build some attacking chances.
Chantel Carranza lofted a ball to the right wing, where
Caitie Baron was waiting to turn the ball in front of goal to find Parlove for the finish and the lead.
The Lakers came out of the locker room aggressive to add to their lead. Cook scored five minutes into the second half to double the lead, taking a centering pass from Baron and willing it through the defense into net. Freshman
Kennedy Bearden scored her second goal in as many collegiate games in the 65' when she rifled home a rebound off a shot from fellow freshman
Brooke Russell.
The Lakers will travel to Mankato, Minnesota next weekend to face two more tough teams as they play Bemidji State and Minnesota St. – Mankato, both of whom were in the NCAA Tournament last season.
