Five Lakers Earn CoSIDA Academic All-American Honors

Grand Valley State's Josh Steible, Sarah Berger, Madison Goen, Hanna Groeber and Gina Patterson  have all been named 2019 Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-Americans for cross country and track & field, per a release, Wednesday, June 26 from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
Steible, a distance athlete on the cross country and track & field earned Second Team Academic All-American honors after he had his best season on the race course and the track while maintaining a 3.73 Grade Point Average as a graduate-student in the High Education Master's program. In cross country, Steible helped the program to its first national championship after he earned USTFCCCA All-American honors and placed 26th at nationals, while he also earned GLIAC First-Team Honors and USTFCCCA All-Region Honors as well. During the track & field season, he finished sixth in the 5,000m during the 2019 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships and earned GLIAC honors in the 10,000m that helped the Lakers capture back-to-back team titles both times.
 
On the women's side, four Lakers captured Academic All-American honors as Sarah Berger received First Team honors, while Madison Goen and Hanna Groeber earned Second Team allocates and Gina Patterson received Third Team honors.
 
Berger a graduate-transfer from Walsh held a 3.73 GPA in the Physician Assistant program, led the way for the Lakers to their sixth cross country national title and was crowned the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country Champion. Beger was also named the USTFCCCA Cross Country National Athlete of the Year and the USTFCCCA DII Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Laker graduate-student also led the way for GVSU to GLIAC and NCAA Midwest Regional titles, as she also was named the GLIAC Athlete of the Year and the Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year. Additionally, she was also named the USTFCCCA National Cross Country Athlete of the Week after she finished as the top DII athlete and finished fifth overall. Berger was also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, a national champion at 1,500m and a eight-time All-American while at Walsh.
 
Goen, a distance athlete for GVSU, held a 3.92 GPA as a Biomedical Science major earned USTFCCCA All-American honors during the cross country season as she finished 26th at the national championships that helped the Lakers win their sixth cross country championships in program history. Goen also earned All-Region and GLIAC First-Team honors as she finished sixth at the GLIAC Cross Country Championships and eighth at regionals. During the track and field seasons, she earned GLIAC honors at the GLIAC Indoor Championships with a third place finish in the 3,000m and qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in the 5,000m and placed 14th, while during the outdoor season she placed second in the 3,000m steeplechase at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships and competed in the 3,000m steeplechase (9th) and the 5,000m (10th) during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. Goen also earned GLIAC academic honors as well.
 
 Groeber a Biomedical Science major with a 3.84 GPA earned All-American honors during all three seasons. In cross country she finished with All-American honors after she placed sixth at the national championships, and captured USTFCCCA All-Region honors and GLIAC First-Team honors. In track & field she earned All-American honors in the 5,000m (8th) during the indoor season and two more allocates in the 3,000m steeplechase (5th) and in the 5,000m (6th) during the outdoor season. Groeber also earned GLIAC honors during the indoor season in the 5,000m (3rd) and was the GLIAC Champion in the 3,000m steeplechase. Additionally, Groeber was also a GLIAC Commissioner's award recipient during the 2018 Academic Fall season. Grober is also a five-time All-American.
 
Patterson a distance athlete for the Lakers earned a 3.82 GPA as an Exercise Science major as she captured All-Americans during all three seasons. In the cross country season, she finished ninth at the NCAA Championships that helped the team win its sixth national title, and was the GLIAC and Midwest Region runner-up. In track & field she captured GLIAC Indoor championships in the 3,000m and as a member of the DMR team, before earning All-American honors in the 3,000m and the 5,000m runs at the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season she captured a conference title in the 5,000m run, then earned All-American honors in the 10,000m after she finished third, and finished ninth in the 5,000m run. Patterson also earned GLIAC Academic honors during the season and was a GLIAC Commissioner's award recipient during the 2018 Academic Fall season. Patterson is also a 10-time All-American.
