No. 2 Lakers win GLIAC Tournament with 4-1 victory Sunday

GVSU comes back to down Saginaw Valley in finals

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The No. 2 Grand Valley State Lakers claimed their 13th straight GLIAC Tournament title with a 4-1 win over the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in the championship match Sunday (Nov. 17) at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers improve to 19-1 overall. Riko Sagara had a pair of goals and two assists to lead the Laker attack.

The Cardinals got on the board first, capitalizing on a Laker turnover and scoring just 30 seconds into play, marking the first time the Lakers trailed since the final two minutes at Minnesota State in their lone loss of the season. Despite a couple chances late in the half, GVSU couldn't capitalize and trailed heading into halftime for the first time this year. Just a few minutes out of the half, they found the equalizer. After generating a third straight corner, Sagara's cross was headed home by Ava Cook to tie the match in the 48'. In the 55' it was Sagara playing provider again, lofting a ball over the back line for Greta DeLoach, who had an incredible finish on a half-volley to beat the keeper and put the Lakers in front.

Sagara would turn goal-scorer in the 59' on a nice combination through the midfield by Lauren Ross and Chantel Carranza. Cook would return the favor to Sagara in the 70' with a smash of a cross along the turf for Sagara to turn goalward. The Lakers also had a penalty opportunity in the second half, but the shot was saved. The Lakers will likely be the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region when the NCAA Tournament field is announced Monday (Nov. 18) at 6 PM ET. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUSoccer will provide updates on opponent and time of the match, which will be in Allendale, when it becomes available.
