No. 1 Lakers top Ashland, 3-0, Friday in GLIAC Semifinal

Ava Cook scores twice to advance GVSU to championship match

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 1 Grand Valley State Lakers earned a 3-0 win over the Ashland Eagles Friday night in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament semifinals at the GVSU Soccer Field. Ava Cook scored a pair of goals to lead the GVSU attack to help the Lakers improve to 19-0-1 on the year. Ashland, who still has a shot at the NCAA Tournament, falls to 10-4-5 on the year.

Cook got the Lakers on the board in the 19' when she headed home a perfect cross from Hailey Wentzloff to the center of the box. A corner combo of Sydney O'Donnell and Riko Sagara set up Madeline Becker for a header finish of her own in the 27' to lead GVSU to a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Cook would tuck home the dagger in the 53' after weaving through the defense and lofting a chip over the Ashland keeper and into the far corner netting. Cook now has a GLIAC-best 16 goals on the year.

GVSU will host the winner of the 2-seed Ferris State and 3-seed Saginaw Valley semifinal, taking place in Allendale following the Lakers win. The match will kick off at 1:00 PM Sunday (Nov. 4) and GVSULakers.com will have links to live video and live stats while @GVSUSoccer live tweets the match.
