ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 2 Grand Valley State Lakers got a pair of goals with under five minutes left to outlast the Michigan Tech Huskies, 3-1, in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on a cold, damp night at the GVSU Soccer Field.
Ava Cook scored a pair of goals and
Chelsea Graves knocked in the game winner while
Sydney O'Donnell contributed a pair of crucial assists. GVSU moves to 11-0-1 on the year and 3-0 in the GLIAC while the Huskies fall to 5-4-1 this season and 0-3 in league play.
The Lakers got on the board first late in the opening period.
Corey Sawall lofted a cross from the left wing for Cook to head home and break the tie just three minutes before halftime. Tech would find the equalizer just shy of the hour-mark on a through ball laced to Grace Shaw for a breakaway look at the net.
The score remained even until the 86' when the Lakers earned a corner and O'Donnell curled the insert towards the back post for Graves to find space near the back post and one-time it home for the go-ahead goal. Just a few moments later, with Tech pushing numbers forward, O'Donnell booted the ball up field, allowing Cook to outrun everyone to the ball, beat a defender and the goalkeeper to will an insurance goal into the net.
The Lakers remain home this Sunday, hosting the Northern Michigan Wildcats at 1:00 PM at the GVSU Soccer Field. GVSULakers.com will provide a live video feed and live stats while @GVSUSoccer will live Tweet.
