# 7 Lakers claims 3-0 victory over Saginaw Valley State

Box Score #7 Grand Valley State won its fifth consecutive game via the shutout and improved to 5-2 with a 3-0 GLIAC win over Saginaw Valley State Friday evening at the GVSU Soccer Field before a crowd of 545.

The Lakers opened the scoring early as senior forward Gabriella Mencotti dished a pass to midfielder Gianna Parlove from a free kick and from there the freshman found the back of the net for her first goal as a Laker at the 12:35 minute mark of the first period.

"I give a lot of credit to our wingers and our center-mids," said head coach Jeff Hosler. "We had a really good first goal and we had a lot of pressure on them to get that first goal."

GVSU kept the pressure on the Cardinals on both sides of the ball, outshooting SVSU by an 11-2 margin in the opening half.

Play picked up at the 55-minute mark when defender Madz Ham crossed the ball from 25 yards out towards the box to midfielder Tara Lierman and Lierman was able to head it in for her third goal of the season to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

Grand Valley State used the momentum from Lierman's goal to score three minutes later at the 57-minute mark when Mencotti burned one past the Cardinals' goalkeeper to give the GVSU a 3-0 lead.

The Laker continued to dominate the game at both ends, limiting the Cardinals to only three shots in the second half and five for the game.

"The last 30 minutes were as dominate as we could expect to be," said Hosler. "Two great goals in that period, a lot of sharing of the ball and a lot of players getting key minutes in a tough match."

GVSU will host Northwood on Sunday (Sept.24) for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
