#12 Lakers Score Five Second Half Goals, Win 9-0 against Tiffin

Box Score #12 Grand Valley State improved to 4-2 on the season after a dominating 9-0 non-conference win over Tiffin on Sunday afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers will return to action Friday (Sept. 22) at 7 p.m. for a conference matchup against Saginaw Valley State at the GVSU Soccer Field.

GVSU came into today's match riding a three-game win streak, during which, they outscored their opponents 7-0 and recorded three shutouts. The Lakers continued their dominant play on both sides of the ball limiting Tiffin to just six total shots.

"I thought today was a good response, Friday I thought we left some good minutes out on the field and we had a lot more collective effort across the board today," said head coach Jeff Hosler. "Everyone that stepped out there added something to our game, Shannon (Quinn) in the back four, played very affectively and is a big part of this four-game shutout streak that we have going for us."

GVSU got on the board first when freshman Gianna Parlove found senior Gabriella Mencotti in front of the box and Mencotti hit the back of the net to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead at the 8:35 mark of the first period. Mencotti added her second goal of the game at the 9:16 mark when she drove home a rebound off a shot from forward Tracey McCoy to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

The scoring would continue for Grand Valley State as Cecilia Steinwascher found Ava Cook, who headed the ball in for the team's third goal and her third of the season at the 18-minute mark of the first period.

GVSU scored their fourth goal at 36:24 mark of the first when freshman Hannah Klingerman found redshirt freshman Corey Sawall in front of the net to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead at the half.

The Lakers continued to carry the play in the second period and Tara Lierman netted the team's fifth goal of the game and her second of the season at the 47th minute mark of the second period. McCoy received credit for her second assist of the game.

Junior Katrina Giantsopoulos scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick after getting fouled in the Tiffin box and then 10 seconds later McCoy would net her first goal of the season to give the Lakers a 7-0 lead.

The Lakers defense dominated the Dragon not allowing them to get their first shot on goal until the 66th minute mark of the second period. Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Radice was able to make the save.

Giantopoulos added her second goal of the game at the 75:59 mark when she fired a shot that the Tiffin goalkeeper couldn't handle to give the Lakers an 8-0 lead. McCoy would add her fifth point to the scoring column with her third assist of the game when she found junior forward Kristy Gomez for her first goal of the season and the team's ninth.
