#12 Lakers Take Down Ashland at Home

Box Score #12 Grand Valley State improved to 3-2 on the season after an impressive 3-0 non-conference win over Ashland Friday evening at the GVSU soccer field before a crowd of 463.

The Laker defense dominated the action in the first half, limiting Ashland to just three total shots.

"Over the last three games we have been very sound defensively," said head coach Jeff Hosler. "Today we got countered a couple of times, but something that we have been striving for is being more consistent over longer periods of time and tonight we were able to do that," added Hosler.

The Lakers would strike first at the 8:35 mark of the first period when freshman Cecilia Steinwascher found senior Gabriella Mencotti in the box from a corner kick to give the Lakers the 1-0 lead. GVSU continued its offensive pressure and Steinwascher would score the first goal of her career from a corner kick at the 25 minute mark to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead at the half.

Grand Valley State continued to carry the play in second period and freshman Ava Cook scored her second goal of the season at the 46 minute mark to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.

"Our goalkeeper (Jennifer Steinaway) has been really good, while Shannon (Quinn) and Cecilia (Steinwascher) have been bright spots for us over this three-game home stretch," added Hosler.

The Lakers outshot the Eagles 21-7.

The Lakers will host Tiffin in a non-conference matchup on Sunday (Sept. 17) at 1 p.m.
