No. 3 Lakers drop 1-0 decision at Ferris State Friday

GVSU has 15-match win streak snapped headed into post-season

Box Score
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 3 GVSU Lakers fell, 1-0, to the Ferris State Bulldogs in a non-conference match to end the regular season Friday afternoon. Grand Valley State doubled up the Bulldogs in shots, 26-13, but were held scoreless for the second time this season and first since the season opener. GVSU had a 15-match win streak snapped with the narrow road defeat.

"Ferris did just what every one of our opponents have done over the last couple weeks: make us look very average," said head coach Jeff Hosler. "When you don't bring energy or focus, you can't execute. And that's not going to win you games at this level."

The Lakers (15-3, 9-0 GLIAC) split the two regular season meetings with Ferris State (11-7, 6-3 GLIAC) this season, with each home team getting a 1-0 result. Gabriella Mencotti led all players with nine shots, including two on goal. The Bulldogs got the only tally of the match in the 76' when Tia VanSuilichem finished a cross from Jenna Hong to give Ferris State the lead.

"Ferris deserves all the credit. They played harder and had the courage to take chances," said Hosler. "Their goalkeeper was spectacular when she had to make saves today. We didn't do enough to challenge her consistently in front of goal and, when we did, we missed easy scoring opportunities."

The Lakers battled hard through the end, with Ava Cook firing a shot on target with under a minute to go, but Alison Chesterfield was up to the task, making her ninth and final save of the match to preserve the win and clean sheet. GVSU returns home to open up the GLIAC Tournament on Tuesday (Oct. 31) in the quarterfinals against eight-seed Michigan Tech. The game will be available live on ESPN3 with live stats on gvsulakers.com.
