No. 3 Lakers top Northern Michigan 3-1 Sunday

GVSU caps off undefeated conference schedule in 2017

Box Score
MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The supporting cast took center stage for the No. 3 Grand Valley State Lakers Sunday afternoon, helping the team finish off an undefeated GLIAC schedule for the 2017 season with a 3-1 win over the Northern Michigan Wildcats on the banks of Lake Superior. Freshman Cecilia Steinwascher had a goal and assist to lead the way while classmate Makenna Schoolman netted her first goal of her career and sophomore Mia Gale scored her first tally of the season in the win. Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Steinaway had five saves. The win is the 15th in a row for the Lakers.

"Our bench really stepped up and played a huge role in this victory," said head coach Jeff Hosler. "Not only did they get on the scoresheet, but impacted the match in all phases."

After a scoreless first half hour, the Lakers (15-2-0, 9-0-0 GLIAC) used a set piece to get the lead. Steinwascher's insert on a corner was steered home by Schoolman for her first goal in a Lakers uniform. Steinwascher would turn goal scorer just two minutes before half time to add to the lead, taking a cross from Corey Sawall and netting her second goal of the season.

"Cec was brilliant today. She was everywhere and put the team on her back in the first half," said Hosler.

The Wildcats (3-10-2, 2-5-2) sliced the deficit in half on a 70' strike from Aimee Colla, but GVSU responded with Gale's 77' goal, assisted by senior Gabriella Mencotti. The Wildcats' goal is the only one scored against the Lakers in conference play this season, with GVSU outscoring their GLIAC opponents 46-1 for the 2017 campaign.

The Lakers finish the regular season this Friday (Oct. 27) in a non-conference bout that has regional ranking implications. The Lakers will face the Ferris State Bulldogs in Big Rapids, Michigan before returning home to host the eight-seed Michigan Tech Huskies in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals at the GVSU Soccer Field on Tuesday (Oct. 31). The matchup with Michigan Tech will be the second meeting in less than two weeks after the Lakers downed the Huskies, 2-0, just two days ago.
