ALLENDALE, Mich.—The second ranked Grand Valley State soccer team took care of business at home on Sunday, scoring three first-half goals on the way to a 4-0 shutout of Ohio Dominican University. Senior
Clare Carlson scored the game winning goal in the eighth minute of play for Grand Valley State (5-0-1), winners of four in a row.
"We cleaned some things up from the Friday contest", said GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler. "We were much better building out of the back, making better decision, better execution, and that all helped us generate better possession and tempo, which gave us the opportunities to be better in the final third."
Showing vast improvement in every aspect of the game after Friday evening's sloppy performance, GVSU got off to a quick start in Sunday's match, getting their first goal of the day on one of 14 corner kicks they would have in the match. Carlson controlled the ball played in by
Marti Corby and fired off a quick shot, which was blocked. Coraling the rebound, Carlson fired a ball into the right upper 90 of goal for her first goal of the season. Not missing a beat, Grand Valley State would get a second goal just four minutes later off the head of senior
Jayma Martin.
Martin's team-leading seventh goal of the season was a thing of beauty, as Corby delivered a quick pass to sophomore
Tara Lierman, who flicked the ball up for Martin to finish with a slicing header into the net. That flush gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game, and it would be smooth sailing from then on out, as Ohio Dominican would rarely cross midfield with possession of the ball, and muster only two shots in the game.
"Jayma's a very focused and motivated player, and it's not just what she does in terms of assists and goals, it's being dynamic on the wing, turn players and relieve pressure on our back when we are high pressed", said Hosler.
A third Laker goal in the 27
th minute, this time by
Kendra Stauffer, pushed the Laker lead to 3-0. Awarded a free kick in right center field about 35 yards out from the Panther goal, Corby chipped a pass over the wall of ODU defenders to a waiting Stauffer, whose first shot was blocked by a Panther defender, but fired a quick second shot past the goalkeeper for her fourth of the season.
Rounding out the scoring in the 78
th minute was freshman
Charley Campbell, who received a cross in front of the goal from
Gabriella Mencotti, strafed to her left and fired a low bouncing shot past the diving goalkeeper for her first career goal as a Laker.
Recording a clean sheet in goal was
Jennifer Steinaway, who improved to 5-0-1 as a starter without needing to make a save across 90 minutes. The Lakers out-shot Ohio Dominican 38-2 in the contest.
GVSU returns to action next weekend, heading up to Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech for a pair of road contest on Friday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 25th, respectively.
