ALLENDALE, Mich.—The Grand Valley State women's soccer team got the best of rival Saginaw Valley State for the second time this season, besting the Cardinals on their home field, 4-0. Sunday afternoon's victory improves the Lakers to 15-1-1 on the season, and a perfect 10-0-0 in conference play on the season.
Senior forward
Kendra Stauffer scored a brace of goals to lead the Lakers, while classmate
Jayma Martin netted her 15
th goal of the season as notching an assist.
The Lakers scored three early goals on the Cardinals, jumping out to an initial lead at the eight minute mark after a goal by
Gabriella Mencotti, her 21
st goal of the season. Four minutes later, Stauffer scored off a deflection from Martin to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, Stauffer widened the margin yet again, putting the Lakers up 3-0 with her second goal of the game. Assisting on the goal was midfielder
Marti Corby, her 20
th assist of the season.
Martin would add a late strike in the 82
nd minute, pushing the final margin of victory to 4-0 as the Lakers won their sixth straight game.
GVSU held the Cardinals to five total shots on goal, all of which were stopped by
Jennifer Steinaway in preserving her ninth clean sheet of the season.
