#4 Lakers Split A Pair In Chicago At the Lewis Dome Tournament

Rosemont, Ill. - #4 Grand Valley State opened the 2014 softball campaign at the Lewis Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Illinois Saturday. GVSU dropped the opener to Winona State by a 6-5 score, but came back with a 2-1 victory over Lewis University in the second game. GVSU will square off versus Upper Iowa at 10 am Sunday, followed by a 2 pm meeting with Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Lakers fell to Winona State 6-5 in eight innings in the opener. Junior Lauren Gevaart pitched effectively in her first start for the Lakers, but was tagged with the loss. Freshman 2B Jenna Lenza was 4-for-4 with a solo home run that came in her first collegiate at bat. RF McKenze Supernaw was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while freshman catcher Marianne Deppe was also 2--for-4 with a double and RBI.

GVSU claimed a 2-1 victory over Lewis in the second game of the day. Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the fifth, but the Lakers tied the game in the top of the sixth and senior 3B Miranda Cleary provided the game-winner with a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Cleary was 3-for-4 in game two, while freshman Kelsey Dominguez drove in the first run with a sac fly. Sophomore Sara Andrasik went the distance, yielding two hits en route to picking up her first win of the season.
