Marquette, Mich. -
The Grand Valley State women's basketball team dropped its second straight GLIAC game on Thursday (Jan. 16) at Northern Michigan. The Lakers got a career-high 15 points from freshman forward Kayla Dawson, but could not overcome the Wildcats' trio of 18-plus point scorers in the 81-66 loss.
Sophomore guard Bailey Cairnduff recorded her 10th consecutive double-digit scoring performance with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Cairnduff also grabbed six rebounds.
Junior guard Meryl Cripe chipped in nine points, which matched her season-high.
Northern Michigan built a 50-28 halftime lead and the Lakers only managed to close the gap late in the contest. GVSU did outscore the Wildcats 38-31 in the second frame, however, the early deficit was too much to overcome.
NMU drained 15 three-pointers and shot 57.7 percent from beyond the arc. Overall, the Wildcats were 27-of-50 from the field.
The loss drops GVSU's overall record to 8-5 and 6-3 in conference play. The Lakers will remain in the upper peninsula this weekend for a clash with Michigan Tech. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST on Saturday (Jan. 18).
