ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team turned in a victory in its 2013 home opener on Friday (Sept. 13), handling Findlay by a score of 8-1 at the GVSU Tennis Courts. It was the first of seven straight home contests for the Lakers.
GVSU, now 3-0 on the year both overall and in the GLIAC, will continue the homestand with a 10 a.m. match against GLIAC foe Wayne State on Saturday (Sept. 14).
The Lakers came through with a 2-1 record in doubles play, winning at both #1 and #3 doubles. The lone loss on the day came in #2 doubles, where GVSU took the match to a tiebreak.
In singles, the Lakers took control, winning all six matchups.
Leah Dancz, Kali Phillips and Niki Shipman all went 2-0 on the day, winning both their singles match and their doubles matches. Phillips was a winner at both #1 singles (6-4, 6-1) and teamed with Dancz to win at #1 doubles (8-4). Dancz was also victorious in her #4 singles match, 6-2, 6-0. Shipman won her #3 singles matchup 6-3, 6-2, then paired up with Morgan Patterson to win at #3 doubles, 8-3.
