MIDLAND, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team dropped its opening NCAA Tournament match to Northwood, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon.
GVSU ends the season with a 24-7 mark overall, while Northwood improves to 21-1 on the year and advances in the NCAA Tournament.
The Timberwolves jumped out in front early with a 3-0 score after doubles competition, winning 8-5 in every position.
In singles play, sophomore Kali Phillips gave GVSU its first point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 6 spot. Northwood then took the No. 2 singles match to lead 4-1, but a win from junior Lexi Rice, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 position put GVSU right back in the match.
It was short lived however as No. 48 Susana Alcaraz wrapped up the NCAA opening match with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot. Northwood now advances to the Sweet 16 in Surprise, Ariz. beginning on May 8.
Grand Valley State returns 10 of its players from this year's roster for the 2013-2014 campaign.
