WORESTER, Mass. - The Grand Valley State women’s lacrosse team fell to Assumption, 13-12, in double overtime in the Lakers’ opening game of the 2013 season at the Multi-Sport Complex on Monday afternoon.
Assumption got on the board first, but the teams traded goals until the 7:28 mark when Grand Valley State went on a 3-0 stretch to lead 7-4 with less than five to play.
The Greyhounds answered back with back-to-back goals, including one with 37 seconds remaining in the first, to give GVSU a slight 7-6 lead heading into the break.
GVSU kept the lead through the opening six minutes of the second stanza before two goals from Steph O'Rourke and a tally from Amy McNeil put Assumption out front, 11-10 with 6:03 left in regulation.
Both teams came up empty over the next five minutes until sophomore Brooke Ingraham fired home a shot from classmate Victoria Devine to tie the game at 11-11 and send the game to overtime.
Assumption once against scored first, tallying goals at the 2:01 and 1:37 mark in the first overtime. Senior Allyson Fritts found the back of the net 17 seconds later, but it would be the only offense for the Lakers as they had just two shots through both overtime periods.
Ingraham and Devine joined Maegan Emery and Jordan Luberto with two goals each, while Devine tallied a team-high three assists. Along with her overtime goal, Fritts had three caused turnovers and a team-high seven ground balls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Kobe grabbed 12 saves in the loss, while Assumption's Michelle Monahan picked up 13 stops as she earned the victory.
GVSU held a slight 33-32 edge in shots, but were plagued with 14 first-half turnovers as the Lakers recorded 24 for the game.
Amy McNeil had a game-high eight goals for Assumption, while O'Rourke was the only other Greyhound to score more than one goal.
Grand Valley State plays at Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday in search of its first win. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
