MIDLAND, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team finished up a 2-1 weekend at the 2013 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament with a 5-3 victory over Tiffin in the third-place match at the Midland Tennis Center on Sunday (Oct. 27).
GVSU was the #4 seed in the tournament, while Tiffin was the #3 seed. The Lakers moved to 13-4 overall on the year with the victory, while Tiffin fell to 16-4 overall.
The victory was in contrast to a match against Tiffin only two weeks ago, when the Dragons picked up a 6-3 victory over the Lakers.
The Lakers took an early lead in doubles, getting wins from the #1 and #3 matches. Lexi Rice/Carola Orna picked up the top doubles victory, 8-4, while Kelly Trapp/Kristina Lucas notched an 8-3 victory at #3 doubles.
In singles, GVSU picked up wins at each of the bottom half of matches. Orna won her #4 singles match, 6-0, 6-1 to lead the way. At #5 singles, it was Trapp picking up a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Lucas had to go three sets and come from behind, but took a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 decision.
In the GLIAC Championship match, Northwood, who beat GVSU in the semifinals, defeated Wayne State, 5-2.
The Lakers' fall season has now concluded, and GVSU will now prepare for the spring season. The schedule for the spring season will be available on gvsulakers.com in the coming weeks.
