Allendale, Mich. -
On a wet and slippery pitch, the Grand Valley State women's soccer team played its best first half of the 2013 season to top rival Ferris State, 6-0 on Saturday (Oct. 12) night. The No. 1 Lakers scored five goals in the opening frame and held the Bulldogs scoreless for their 11th consecutive shutout, which is a new program record.
The streak is also tied for the fifth-longest in NCAA Division II history.
Senior defender Autumn Jacobs broke things open at the 18:54 mark on a shot from the top of the box. Jacobs had just enough elevation on the attempt to send it over the head of keeper Savanna Wojtanowski for her first goal of the year.
In the 28th minute, senior midfielder Shelby Humphries headed a ball just wide of Wojtanowski, but freshman Marti Corby finished it off with a header of her own to put GVSU in front, 2-0.
Less than eight minutes later, freshman forward Kendra Stauffer tallied a pair of goals 57 seconds apart. The first came on a two-on-one with Michelle Foote. The two traded passes to beat Wojtanowski without any Bulldog defenders in the area. Stauffer's second goal came on a shot from the right half of the box, which scooted by the keeper and into the bottom left corner of the net.
Sophomore midfielder Katie Klunder tapped in a long cross from Humphries in the 41st minute to extend GVSU's lead to 5-0.
Things slowed down in the second half, though, Alyssa Wesley added another tally for good measure at the 87:05 mark. Wesley headed in a corner kick from Katy Woolley for her first goal as a Laker.
Fourteen different GVSU players have scored this season, while nine have notched at least three goals, including Corby, Foote, Humphries and Stauffer.
Defensively, the Lakers held Ferris State to just three shots and senior goalkeeper Abbey Miller only had to make one save. Miller has played 976:33 minutes this season and has yet to allow goal.
The victory brings GVSU's overall record to 10-0-1 and it improved to 7-0-0 in GLIAC play.
The Lakers will play their fourth home match of the month this Friday (Oct. 18) against Findlay. It is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. EST.
