DETROIT - Despite picking up two doubles points, the Grand Valley State women's tennis team fell to Wayne State, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at the WSU Tennis Courts.
GVSU moves to 3-1 on the year and in GLIAC play while Wayne State improves to 4-1 for the year. GVSU continues its season against Lake Superior State on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. The Lakers then travel to Michigan Tech for a 10 a.m. match on Sunday.
In doubles action, sophomore Leah Dancz and senior Allison Fecko picked up an 8-3 win in the No. 2 spot over Julia Kamenko and Alex Poissant. The duo of junior Niki Shipman and Morgan Carney won 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles spot against Tanya Joseph and Jessica Kruczek. Wayne State picked up the final point in doubles action with an 8-1 win against senior Katelyn Schaffer and junior Lexi Rice.
The Warriors picked up wins at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Carney was able to earn a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kruczek in the No. 5 spot, while sophomore Kali Phillips took her match, 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 6 singes spot. The final point came down to the No. 2 match where Dancz won the first set, 6-2, but fell to Kamenko 6-4, 6-2 to give Wayne State the victory.
