GVSU Women's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The No. 1 Grand Valley State women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw against conference foe Saginaw Valley State on a rainy Friday evening at the GVSU Soccer Field.

GVSU moves to 6-0-2 on the year and 2-0-1 in GLIAC play. It is the first time since Oct. 22, 2010 that the Lakers did not earn a win in conference action. SVSU is now 2-1-3 for the season and 1-0-2 in league play.

In the second overtime, GVSU took five shots to Saginaw Valley's one. With just five seconds left, senior Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) hit the cross bar and looked to cross the goal line, but Ivezaj grabbed it up as the final horn sounded.

The opening stanzas were in the Lakers' favor as GVSU owned a 14-2 edge in shots heading into the overtime periods. One of Grand Valley State's best chance came in the 44th minute when senior Alyssa Mira (Livonia, Mich.) sent the ball towards the left side of the net, but Cardinal keeper Laura Ivezaj knocked it wide left.

For the game, GVSU owned a 19-5 shot advantage and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. Mira paced the Lakers with three shots, including her one on target.  Charley Porter notched two for SVSU.  

Laker keeper, senior Chelsea Parise (Sterling Heights, Mich.), picked up her sixth straight shut out and has not allowed a goal in 546 minutes and 55 seconds.  Ivezaj earned eight saves in the tie.

GVSU hosts Northwood on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GVSU Soccer Field.  Northwood fell to Ferris State on Friday, 2-1 in double overtime.
