ALLENDALE, Mich. - No. 2 Grand Valley State women's soccer tallied two goals in each half to defeat regional foe Indianapolis, 4-1, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the final game of the GVSU Kick Off Tournament.
The win gives the Lakers two wins to start the season and extends their home-unbeaten streak to 39 games. Indianapolis is now 1-1 after picking up a double-overtime victory on Friday.
Grand Valley State kept the ball on the Greyhounds' side of the field, taking seven corner kicks and six shots, in the opening 25 minutes of the game. It wasn't until a fresh pair of legs came off the bench that the Lakers were able to find the back of the net.
Sophomore Jenny Shaba(West Bloomfield, Mich.) notched her first career goal in the 42nd minute. The forward fired what looked to be a cross from the left side of the field, but the ball bent into the upper 90 of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, freshman Katie Bounds (Southfield, Mich.) connected with senior Maria Brown(Columbus, Ohio) just outside the six in time for Brown to send the ball into the lower corner to give the Lakers a 2-0 advantage into the break. Brown's goal was the second of the season as she scored in the 3-1 victory against Armstrong on Friday night.
GVSU did not allow UIndy to take a single shot in the first half and only allowed one corner kick.
The Lakers added a third goal off freshman Casey McMillan's(Byron Center, Mich.) first career goal. McMillan took advantage of a one-on-one situation with a defender and beat her to the right side of the ball before sending it into the right side of the net in the 67th minute.
Indianapolis was able to respond when Shelby Spinelli sailed a shot from 25-yards out into the upper right side of the net past junior keeper Abbey Miller'soutstretched hands.
Grand Valley State added on one more goal, thanks to a great cross from Brown that found sophomore Cassandra Wiltshire(Ajax, Ontario) on the right side of the box. Wiltshire sent home her first career goal at 82:27, giving the Lakers a 4-1 advantage.
For the game, GVSU owned a 17-5 shot advantage while also holding a 15-3 edge in corner kicks. Greyhound keeper Megan Fee picked up four saves. Senior Chelsea Parise(Sterling Heights, Mich.) started in net, but did not see any action. Miller (Saginaw, Mich.) started the second half and picked up four saves.
The Lakers are back in action on Friday, Sept. 7 in Mankato, Minn. GVSU takes on Minnesota-Duluth in a neutral site game before playing NSIC-favorite Minnesota State on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
