MIDLAND, Mich. - The No. 4 Grand Valley State men's tennis team upset No. 3 Wayne State, 5-4, in the third-place match at the GLIAC Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
GVSU improves to 12-14 on the year, while Wayne State drops to 14-11 to end the tournament.
GVSU picked up two points in the doubles competition at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots. Senior Marc Roesslein and Andrew Darrell won 8-4 in the No. 1 spot, while senior Benny Delgado-Rochas and sophomore Bryan Hodges picked up a hard-fought 9-8 (5) win at the No. 2 spot.
Leading 2-1 going into singles play, the Lakers had to win two matches in three sets to secure the victory. Delgado-Rochas was able to get the GVSU victory when he defeated Michael Fitzgerald, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. Classmate Roesslein also picked up the win after falling 5-7 in the opening match, he was able to rebound with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot. Hodges defeated Oscar Gammarra, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot.
The win against the Warriors comes after the Lakers' dropped the regular season dual match versus Wayne State, 5-4.
