Lakers Fall to Lindenwood in Home Opener

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team could not find an answer for Lindenwood's 12-second half goals as it dropped its first-ever home game, 18-8, on Friday afternoon at the Laker Lacrosse Stadium in front of 1,812 fans.

GVSU falls to 1-4 on the season heading into its game against Urbana on Sunday, March 18 at noon. Lindenwood improves to 5-2.

Freshman Victoria Devine (Centereach, N.Y.) led the Lakers with three goals, while five other players found the back of the net. Redshirt freshman Sarah Lowe (Okemos, Mich.) tallied two assists.

Linenwood opened up the scoring at the 28:39 mark, but freshman Brooke Ingraham (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was able to tie the score at one less than a minute later.

The teams would knot the score two more times in the half before Lindenwood went a 3-1 run to close out the half and take a 6-4 lead into the break. Freshman Korinne Culley (Hilliard, Ohio) stopped the Lions' streak with an unassisted goal at the 4:48 mark.

Coming into out of halftime, Lindenwood rattled off nine straight goals to lead 15-5 with 9:40 on the clock. The Lions' leading scorer, Justiene Groothuis, tallied three of her game-high tying five goals during the stretch.

Redshirt freshman Meagan Emery (Belmont, Mich.) converted a free-position shot to shrink the lead to nine, but the Lions scored three straight goals to push its lead to 18-6 with less than two minutes to play.

Freshmen Jordan Luberto (Okemos, Mich.) and Rachel Leibovitz (Naperville, Ill.) each tallied a goal in the last two minutes of the game for an 18-8 final score.

Lindenwood held a commanding shot total, 40-14, including a 25-8 mark in the second half. The Lions also held a 16-11 edge on draw controls.

Freshman keeper Audrey Kobe (New Hudson, Mich.) picked up 15 saves in the loss, while keeper Christine Hehmeyer had five for Lindenwood.

The Lakers will look to avenge their loss later in the season when GVSU travels to Lindenwood on April 20 at 7 p.m.
